State police are seeking information on a phone scam that victimized an Effort woman.

According to state police at Fern Ridge, the 42-year-old Effort woman was contacted by the number 202-621-0572 and told she was eligible for a free grant and was given a grant number. She was then told that she would need to make a one-time, refundable payment of $250 to process the grant, police said, and was told to go to a grocery or convenience store to purchase a prepaid Reloadit card.

The victim purchased the card and provided the scammers with the number, and then was contacted a week later and told she would need to pay an additional $850 for grant insurance, police said. The victim became suspicious and contacted police.
